SEMPRE Joins the Launch of the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation

At a glance: The launch of the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation under the Linux Foundation marks a pivotal step toward open, AI-native CU/DU architectures that can support both cutting-edge commercial deployments and mission-critical defense systems, including counter-UAS (CUAS) operations.

What’s happening: The OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation brings together industry, government, and academic partners to accelerate development of open, interoperable CU/DU software, a foundational component of next-generation wireless. The effort focuses on reducing integration risk, improving security, and enabling real-world deployment across diverse environments.

Why it matters: AI-native operation of CU/DU software is crucial for networks that must withstand interference and intentional disruption, conditions typical in contested airspaces where CUAS systems operate. As wireless infrastructure moves toward AI-enabled 5G and early 6G, open architectures that can host advanced sensing, mitigation, and real-time decisioning become essential.

SEMPRE’s work in hardened wireless infrastructure is already delivering on these principles. Through our contract with the US Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) to deliver counter-UAS protection together with Dedrone by Axon and Tiami Networks, we are deploying resilient digital infrastructure that integrates secure connectivity, compute and sensing at the edge. Foundations like OCUDU accelerate paths to deployment by creating a common, secure software ecosystem that supports AI-driven c-UAS detection and response.

The big picture: SEMPRE has already been developing AI-RAN, ISAC (Integrated Sensing and Communications), and edge-hosted applications on top of its fully integrated 5G stack, enabling resilience and mission reliability in the most demanding environments. Unlike solutions that stop at connectivity alone, SEMPRE delivers a Total Infrastructure DeviceTM with connectivity, networking, cloud, backhaul and AI-application hosting, that operates securely even when under attack.

“Open CU/DU foundations are meaningful when they empower real operational capability,” said Rob Spalding, SEMPRE CEO. “We are already deploying the type of resilient, AI-driven infrastructure that OCUDU aims to standardize, and this work directly strengthens our ability to counter threats such as unmanned aerial systems in contested airspace.”

What’s next: OCUDU provides a shared software foundation that benefits both commercial innovation and defense readiness. SEMPRE will continue to advance deployable AI-enabled wireless infrastructure that supports CUAS, industrial operations, and secure communications at scale.
